Sunday Sweets: Geeky Goodness

I half-jokingly asked y'all to submit some Sweet Stars of the 'Trek or 'Gate variety a while back, and as usual, you delivered! So today let's take a look at some of the best Stargate goodies out there. I do have to warn you, though: There are no SGA-specific Sweets here. Hopefully you won't be as crushed by this gaping inadequacy in cakedom as I am. [sniffle]

Ok, first up, Lynellen nominated this bit of awesomeness made by Charm City Cakes, aka the Ace of Cakes:

Very nice, very nice. Duff and the gang continue to rock.

Kassandra B. found the next two. First a super shiny specimen from Rachel's Custom Cakes:

And then this hilarious example from Cake Corner:

I can't stop smiling at this one - it's both adorable AND geeky: my favorite combo!

Those are all fabulous, of course, but Kendra's find is the hands-down winner. Get ready, geeky guys and gals, 'cuz here comes a Stargate wedding cake. Awwww yeeeeeah!

And you thought geeks had no sense of elegance. C'mon, just look at this thing!

Check out the great details on the topper:

I love all the little touches of red throughout the design - just beautiful.

You can see a few more shots here, where the groom writes that the wormhole connection is actually hand-painted icing. I could have sworn that was an edible printed image, so color me impressed. Plus, the entire cake was made by his in-laws - how cool is that?!?

Gee, Ya Think?

So someone at the bakery felt this cake needed an explanation, but not a do-over. I also can't help but notice that that particular "someone" has rather nice handwriting.

Of course I mean nothing by that; I was merely making an observation.

Thanks to Claudia D., who tells me this is her "favorite" birthday cake, even though her name is NOT "Genenick Claudia Shawn".

Fear Factor, CW Style

Eons ago when the show Fear Factor first came out, I discovered something about myself: I have an extremely sympathetic gag reflex. Yep. Show me a video of someone eating yak brains, and I want to...well, yak.

Imagine how much better the show would have been, though, if they'd substituted the following cakes for the gross foods challenge. It wouldn't have been that much easier on the contestants, and seeing their expressions when they got a pleasant surprise as opposed to a sticky/wriggly one would have been awesome.

Oh, and in case this intro hasn't been warning enough, guys, here's a tip: PUT THE FOOD DOWN. AND THE COFFEE. AND THAT PRICELESS MING DYNASTY VASE. (Dude, what are you doing carrying that around, anyway?)

First up, here's looking at ewe, kid.

Step right up! No need to be sheepish; this cake is a shear delight!

Eva G., for some reason the phrase "bubblegum tongue" from that John Mayer song keeps coming to mind. (And now every time you hear that song, you will think of this cake. That is my gift to you. [bowing])

Or if you'd prefer to live high on the hog, you can always pig out on this guy:

Looks like someone brought home the bacon. Hey Cattie P., way to ham it up!

Hey, where are you all going? I'm not done yet! Ok, ok, no more puns - promise.

This one looks kinda crunchy:

Stephanie N., I don't care how artistically done this sucker is - I'd still stomp on him in a pinch. (Assuming he was less than an inch long, of course. Otherwise, Jooooohhn!!!)

And lastly, let's finish up with a little seafood. (Although for some of you, this will mean seeing all the food you ate for breakfast.)

[lower lip trembling] Must. Keep. Swallowing.

From the short bursts of eye contact I was able to make with this guy before the dry heaving began, I think I decided it was a catfish. And as for those green things - well, it helps me to keep the bile at bay if I tell myself they're grapes. So we're going with that, ok, Joanna B.? Don't bother telling me they're fish eggs, or catfish brains, or the prepubescent larvae of a water-dwelling grindylow: honestly, I don't want to hear it.

The Nose "No"s

These nosy Wrecks are certainly nothing to sneeze at.

We can always count on the drug companies for body part cakes, can't we, Amy S? Let's just hope that applicator isn't fully loaded. Oh, and that the cake isn't pistachio with lemon-glaze filling. Heheheh.

Ashley P. sniffed out a model that looks like a retro-fitted Space Invaders blaster:

To quote that guy from Geekologie: PEW PEW!

Celebrating a nose bleed: just one more occasion you never knew cakes were perfect for.

This next one may look like an adobe hut or cave entrance, but it's not.

I said "IT'S NOT." Work with me here, people, will ya?

Anyhoo, this gratuitous up-the-nose shot was found by Jessica G., and I'm lovin' that white shell border. Because you always want your giant schnoz to have a delicate finishing touch.

This next one's a lousy photo, but only because Tara H. had to take a picture of a picture to get it:

Ah, nose hair and extraneous apostrophes: It just don't get no betta!

In Honor of the Rick Roll

The Rickroll has officially been beaten to death, which is why you won't find a 'rolling link here on Wrecks today.* However, it's still pretty funny, and some folks are still doing it, so in honor of those who have or will be rolled today, here's a lovely little accompanying cake:

Carl found it here; it was made by The Bleeding Heart Bakery, and is one of the nicest Rickroll cakes I've seen. I think the decorator really captured the hair height and patented "Rick Astley Dancing Elbows" quite well, don't you?

And while I'm posting April Fool's related news, I've gotta give a birthday shout-out to my big brother, Ben. Yes, my brother was born on April Fool's. And if you think I didn't get some serious teasing-mileage out of that growing up, you are quite mistaken. [wicked grin] Happy birthday, Ben!

*After today, though, all bets are off.

Botched Balloons

When it comes to cake decorating, you can't get any more basic than the balloon. One roundish blob of icing, a string, and voila! You're done! This staple of icing decor is so simple that even the most inexperienced of decorators couldn't possibly Wreck it up.

[pause]

BWAHAHAHAH! Hah, did you see what I did there? How I managed to keep a straight face? Hoo boy! [wiping eyes] Heehee!

Ok, seriously, let's count down the ways in which Wreckerators have managed to destroy the seemingly simple balloon, shall we?

1) Gravity Need Not Apply

I suppose you could say the writing is what's upside down, but even then those balloons look more like wrinkly piles of fresh paint than anything else. Yech.

2) Floaters, or Swimmers?

I see this problem a lot, and I don't think it's just 'cuz I have that V-day post on the brain.

It doesn't help when the "balloons" are swimming in a circle, either:

This balloon placement makes perfect sense...during tornado season.

3) Too Small

This is no doubt a commentary on the vast, off-centered, blankness of life.

4) Too big.

These behemoths are coming in for the kill with their teensy dagger strings.

5) Swirly Suckers

Multicolored swirls look, at best, like lollipops. At worst, we're facing the Teletubby poo debacle all over again.

6) "You may use any icing color in the kitchen. EXCEPT THIS ONE."

Ooh, could those be a gaggle of failing organs*, or perhaps hacky sacks made from old pantyhose? Here's hoping!!

Janice L., Nezuko, Troy K., Helen D., Jessica G., & Bex, thanks for taking us up, up and away.

* Geese, organs - they're practically interchangeable, right?
