Send 'Em In

Wow, the blockbuster holidays just keep comin' this month: did you know it's national Clown Week?!?

Needless to say, the clowns of the world (the ones who wear make-up, I mean) couldn't be happier about the week-long celebration:

"Beat it, kid. I'm on a break."

Oh. Well, I mean, most of the clowns are excited. Why, just look at this giddy fella!

Tell me, Mr. Bubbles, have you ever felt more alive?

Mr. Bubbles?

Uh...sir? [honking rubber nose] Hello?

Well, maybe we'll just leave him to rest in peace, and move on to...

...uh, well, not this guy. He looks dead tired.

And I'm sure these two...severed heads... are just resting, too, kids. Ha. Ha. Erm...

Oh, look, here's a happy clown! So happy, in fact, he's gone cross-eyed!

(Give it a second.
Theeere
it is.)

On the other hand, he might be bleeding demised. You know, ceased-to-be. Expired and gone to meet his maker. Stiff, bereft of life, run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This may, in fact, be an EX clown.

Or he's just resting.

Well, no matter; here's a clown with a full LOAD of...uh...exuberance:

Wow, we've got a live one here! (And I think he needs a change.)

Happy Clown Week, Jennifer, Julie M., Heather B., Eve & Noelle, Ashley, & Kathryn H.! May all your pies fly true, your noses honk, and your cars maintain their TARDIS- like defiance of the laws of physics
.

Maybe He Likes Feet?

When you run a restaurant in Asia, and you want to put some fancy English script on one of your display cakes, maybe you shouldn't ask the waiter you just fired to help translate.

Just a thought.

Don't worry, Rebecca M.; I'm sure he was only kidding.

Note: Yes, this photo really was taken in a restaurant in Asia. Beyond that, I don't have any details - so let's just hope a vengeful waiter really was the culprit.

What's This?

Earlier today John had the song "What's This?" from Nightmare Before Christmas stuck in his head.

After looking at these Wrecks, now *I* do.

What's this? What's this?
There's color everywhere

What's this?
There's white things in the air

What's this?

It's orange and so hairy - what's the deal with those two berries? I don't care!
What's this?

[bumpahbumpahbumpabumpabumpabBUM]

What's this? What's this?
I can't believe my eyes,

What's this?
A donkey tank surprise?

What's this? A swirly mass so curly, could the purple be too girly? Should this song be ending early? No we're going 'til we hurl-y!!

What's this?

Could it be, oh could it be? Did I get my wish?

Here's something that makes sense: a meteorite bird fiiiish!

What's this?

[dumpadumpadumpadumpbaBUM]

[wheeyouwheeyouwheeyouwhee...]

What's this? What's this? There's something very wrong!

What's this? That blue thing's really long.

What's this?

It's positively crappy, and yet I feel so happy, have I possibly gone sappy? I think I need a nappy 'cuz this song is kind of rappy so I guess I'll get a frappey and go shopping at the Gappy...

WHAT.

IS.

THIS?!?

S.K., Patrick T., Chris E., Reagan B., Rebekah W., Austin L., Alex S., Kaylyn M., & Mikaela, your guess is as good as mine.

Oh, and for your continued "enjoyment" I have a special treat today: while we were writing this post, John & #1 (aka "the other Jen") kept singing it to get the cadence right. This...got really entertaining.

So, I decided to tape them.

There were a few interruptions, but overall I think you'll find their rendition...um...well...just don't have the volume up too loud, k?

"Enjoy!"

(If you're wondering what my contribution is here, I'm the one doing the scrolling. And giggling.)

Update from john: Please note that no animals were harmed during the making of this video. :)

A Seedy Celebration

It's National Watermelon Day.

FINALLY.

And you know what that means, right?

Time to buy a cake.

Do those look like minnows? Just a tad, Pole.

(No, I've never met anyone named "Pole" before, either. But - BUT - John is Polish. So...um...maybe I sometimes affectionately refer to him as "Pole," ok? You don't know. Look, bottom line: just WORK WITH THE PUN, people, ok? Work...with the pun.)

So, how can YOU celebrate National Watermelon Day?

With healthy stuff, of course!

You know, like oil-soaked Cheetos:

Erm. Wrong oil.

Or a traditional "ICU" Melon:

Don't make me call Gallagher, punk.

Or perhaps some exotic plant life:

"FEED ME, SEYMOUR!"

Or, um, vampire ants?

"Vlad! Mortimor! Pull out! Ve've sucked 'er dry!

Teresa, Emily B., Beth, Missy M., & Erica H., I think I'm going to need a "Beware Mortimor the Vampire Ant" t-shirt. Can any of you do something about that?

>:= <--That's my vampire ant emoticon. You like?

Battle of the Beach

{We now return to your favourite underwater crime series, "Crab Cakes: Ocean Justice"}

{sobbing} "Help! Help!"

"Dr. Octopus is back! And his shenanigans are more evil than ever!"

"Mwuaah haa haa! You'll never stop me! I may have lost six legs in the last battle, but I'll never lose the power to DESTROY YOU!!"

"Stop right there, partner!"

"Nobody messes with the Sheriff of Crabtown."

Little did the Sheriff know, he was about to meet Doc Oct's gang of corrupt cephalopod cohorts straight from Squid Roe:

Mr. Blue...
"Dress sharp, kill clean."

The Twins...
{in unison} "We're adorable and ready to ink."

And Crazy Lou!
"WwwhhaaaLLAA OOOAaAaaHHhhH!"

Gulp.

""Don't worry, Sheriff. I, Professor Knowsitall, am writing up a sneaky plan to destroy the Evil Octopodes once and for all! First, we'll lead them down to the beach using cunning tactics."

"Then, we'll all stop shaving our armpits...

"Ya know, to appear more intimidating."

"Lastly, we'll disguise ourselves as footballs and hurl each other at them in an all-out ambush!"
"Now that's a pinch-hitter!"
(Oh, that's baseball? Whatever. No need to be crabby!)

Stay tuned for our next episode where Crabtown gets hit with a tidal wave! Will the Sheriff make it out alive? What happened to little Jake? And who took all the suntan lotion? Rolling credits: Jessica, Mauri T., Laura F., Carrie S., Kristy S., Jessica H., Carolann, Gabrielle W., Naomi, Beth W., Amanda, and Megan C.

Note from Jen: I have to add that the second to last crab reminds me of my favorite poem: "Ode to a Small Lump of Green Putty I Found in My Armpit One Midsummer Morning." That is all.

Sunday Sweets: Fabulous Faux Flowers

The next time you see "fresh flowers" on a cake, look more closely. They might actually be gumpaste.

I love the yellow and purple flowers on this one. I'm not very good with all the names, but I think they're daisies. And the photography is stunning, too.

Made by Abbie Tabbie

These aren't on a cake yet, but I thought Abbie's work on that top flower was especially fantastic. (Pretty sure it's a daisy.) Check out the blending of the pale green!

Next, we have the work of Ellen Bartlett:

She makes a mean daisy.

You know you're dealing with skilled artisans when you have to email them to make sure the flowers aren't real. (I did. They aren't.)

Our next cakes were made by Lyndsey Gamble:

I love the big bunches of flowers. Daisies.

Not only are the flowers fantastic, but check out the lace and ribbon work! (Yes, those are sugar, too.)

I love the contrast between the orange and the purple.

Just look at the veining in the petals! Wow. Those are some sweet daisies.

Such a cool design: the minimalism of the cake makes the flower burst really "pop."

As a guy who's spent the last three years staring at some the of the best and worst cakes in the world, I often wish that I could go back to our wedding day and get a more memorable cake. Of course, knowing Jen, we'd then have to choose between a beautiful cake like this - only covered in poppies - or a perfect scale model of a Borg cube inscribed with "Resistance is futile."

Speaking of which, we're looking for more Sci-Fi Sweets! So if you have one to nominate, be sure to send it to sundaysweets (at) cakewrecks.com. Thanks, and wreck on!
